SEC Publishes Guide to Facilitate EDGAR Next Compliance

The SEC has released the Small Entity Compliance Guide, a resource developed to help small businesses in understanding and complying with EDGAR Next, the September 2024 rule and form amendments that enhance the security of the SEC’s EDGAR system and improve filers’ ability to access and manage accounts. EDGAR Next applies to all registrants who electronically submit filings on the EDGAR system. This includes entities such as issuers and filing agents as well as individuals, such as officers and directors subject to the requirements of Section 16 of the Securities Exchange Act.

The guide addresses the following topics:

  • Compliance dates
  • New definitions pertaining to EDGAR Next
  • EDGAR’s addition of optional application programming interfaces (APIs).
  • The improved Form ID application for EDGAR access
  • The requirement to present individual account credentials and complete multifactor authentication
  • The new EDGAR Filer Management website dashboard

Countdown to EDGAR Next Compliance

  • March 24, 2025—transition to EDGAR Next begins and new EDGAR Filer Management website and dashboard go live
  • September 12, 2025—filers must enroll by this date to continue to file uninterrupted on EDGAR
  • December 19, 2025—filers must enroll by this date to to continue to make EDGAR filings

For further guidance and additional resources, including recorded webinars, instructional videos, and “How Do I” guides, please visit the EDGAR Next webpage on the SEC’s website. Small businesses with questions about the transition may call the SEC’s EDGAR Business Office at (202) 551-8900 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays. When calling with inquiries, select option 2 for EDGAR Next help, and option 3 for both filer technical support and technical assistance with submitting Form ID.
