SEC Publishes Report and Recommendations on the 39th Annual Small Business Forum

On September 14th, the SEC presented a report to Congress regarding the 39th Annual Small Business Forum that was hosted by the Office of the Advocate for Small Business Capital Formation on June 18th, 2020. This inclusive, special event brought together members of the public and private sectors, including entrepreneurs, investors, and market participants from across the country, to propose suggestions for policy affecting companies on the rise and their investors. These companies range from startups to smaller, publicly traded companies.

This year’s virtual Small Business Forum featured candid discussions about the trials and triumphs faced by startups to small cap corporations and showcased talks about minority- and women-owned businesses as well as rural businesses and their investors. It also explored prospective paths for the following generation of public companies.

The report gives a rundown of the forum’s proceedings, including the participants’ recommendations for revisions needed to the capital-raising structure. It also includes the SEC’s responses to those recommendations. The report seeks to represent the enthusiasm conveyed by the speakers and participants who were open about their successes and challenges in capital formation and ways that the framework could be revised to enable a more inclusive capital formation environment.

The 2020 forum report, video gallery, and event webcast are available for download online on the SEC’s Office of Advocate for Small Business Capital Foundation webpage. To provide feedback about this year’s Small Business Forum or ideas for future events that the Office may host focused on access to investor capital, contact the office via email at smallbusiness@sec.gov.
